Workshop on Sustainable LED Lighting to Enhance Energy Efficiency in Palestinian Municipalities
Under the patronage of the Palestinian Energy and Natural Resources Authority and organized by the municipalities of Beit Jala and Bethlehem, a specialized workshop on LED lighting and renewable energy was held as part of a project to develop street lighting networks in Beit Jala using energy-efficient LED units. The project, funded by the German government, aims to promote sustainable lighting solutions and improve energy consumption efficiency in Palestinian municipalities.
This workshop aligns with a broader strategy to support the transition toward environmental sustainability and achieve sustainable development in Palestine.
The workshop brought together 21 engineers and experts in engineering and renewable energy, representing various municipalities and national institutions, including Beit Jala Municipality, Bethlehem Municipality, Doha Municipality, Al-Khader Municipality, the Environmental Quality Authority, the Palestinian Energy and Natural Resources Authority, Bethlehem University, the Engineers’ Association, as well as representatives from the private engineering sector.
Discussions focused on modern technological solutions in LED lighting, which serve as an efficient alternative to traditional lighting. Participants explored the economic and environmental benefits of LED lighting, its integration with solar energy systems, and the safe disposal of conventional lighting equipment such as high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps.
Key workshop outcomes included several important recommendations, such as developing implementation plans to replace traditional lighting with LED systems, ensuring the safe disposal of old lighting equipment, exploring sustainable funding sources for energy projects, and enhancing institutional collaboration between municipalities, private companies, and government institutions.
